Maurice was dismissed from his post at King’s College in 1853 for expressing doubts about Hell Darwin’s Origins of Species appeared in 1859 and the controversial Essays and Reviews were published in 1860. The religious census of 1851 highlighted the national lack of church attendance F.D. However, prolonged and often minute discussion of “this or that particular creed” was not always easy to avoid in England in the 1850s and ’60s, as the evangelical movement came into very public conflict with the forces of secularism and Catholicism.
